The Fate of Hanweir - Headlines and Ravings

Hanweir is a small town on the plane of Innistrad, and during the Travails, culminating with the rise of Emrakul on the plane, the entire town was corrupted.  Here is the tale, told in blogs, snippits, mailings to streamers, and news, on the fate of every inhabitant of the town.  The history of Magic visiting Hanweir began in the first Innistrad block, with the AR game following Cathar Raben Amsel, and the short sword, the Bloodletter.

This blog is putting the Hanweir Chronicle events in correct order, for readers to experience the change of the township in the Shadows over Innistrad.  You can read the original posts on the original page.

The Hanweir Chronicle

The Hanweir Chronicle is the newspaper printed in Hanweir.  Led by Editor in Chief, Oliver Hayfield

Oliver Hayfield, Hanweir Chronicle Editor in Chief

Headline: Town of Hanweir declares itself Sovereign Province

Box #1:

“Deben ser fundidos. El armero necesita plata para el armamento del techo y la cima del muro. Se puede tomar éstos a él? Gracias - Oliver Hayfield”

Translation: “They must be melted. The armorer needs silver for the armor on the roof and the top of the wall. Can you take these to him? Thank you - Oliver Hayfield”

Decree attached reads "By order of the town of Hanweir, all silver munitions must be moved to the top of the village wall."

Headline: Irregular Activity Continues Outside the Walls of Hanweir

Headline: Strangely Productive Town Hall Meeting

Editor:  At this point, one can already see the start of Emrakul's influences.  The town is becoming unified in thought.  Joined also in their new distrust of Avacyn.

Box #2: Das mysteriöse Paket wird ausgepackt #HanweirChronicle

Translation: The Mysterious Package is unpacked.

The letter inside read:

A lone vampire was spotted outside the wall last evening. She called to be let inside, but guards warned her to turn around lest she face impalement. The vampire was disheveled and travel-worn—not rabid as others have been, but clearly losing grip on maintaining her composure. She stood still in the cold rain awaiting entrance for quite some time. When she offered to trade her jewelry over the wall out of desperate thirst, it became clear she was not accustomed to the life of more nomadic vampires.

I attempted to interview her from atop the Hanweir wall.

Me: What is your name, villain?

V: My name is not important! Please! I have gold and pearls to trade!

Me: What is your lineage?

V: My lineage doesn't matter anymore.

Me: Why doesn't it matter?

V: It simply doesn't! Please, I am so thirsty...

Me: All residents of Hanweir are locked within our walls.

The vampire, upon hearing this, dissolved into a fit of manic laughter.

V: Locked within the walls! Even here, they are locked within the walls!

The vampire continued to laugh while violently kicking the stone of our walls, swearing incoherently. It became clear that the creature was mad due to starvation. I retreated to my chamber and obtained a rat from under the floorboards to throw to her.

I did so, and our interview continued.

Me: Why have you travelled so far from home if you are unaccustomed to hunting in the wild?

V: How dare you deliberately insult me! I can't eat this, you idiot!

By now the biting rain had become irritating and my patience waned. I needed answers. I sliced a small cut into my finger and dribbled it down the side of the wall. The vampire snapped its jaws and lapped it up quickly. Her glamer became weak, and her vicious hands began trying to climb up the walls. The nearby Militia Captain decided to take action and shot her with an arrow, whence she fell to her death.

Taking into consideration the immediate reprimand I received from the councilmembers, I will no longer conduct interviews with non-human beings.

I am left confused. Where did this vampire come from? Why was she so poorly dressed for the wilds? I am most upset that this was probably my last opportunity to speak with an outsider. Regardless, I must try to rest. These are terrible times.

Headline: Construction of the Hanweir Wall Finished

Editor: Again, the unity and paranoia is starting to join together Hanweir citizens.  They no longer are allowed to leave the newly constructed walls.  They must remain together.

Headline: Turmoil at Town Hall

Editor - the last sane people leave Hanweir.

Box #3:

BOX CONTENTS:

A jar of preserved pears accompanied by a…pear of letters.

“I write this entry from atop the Hanweir wall. I find it amusing and self-congratulatory that not only dad my village secede from Videns Parish and Gavony, but we felt arrogant enough to name our (one-town) province of Hanweir. If we used a currency, would it be called the Hanweir? Are the individual streets to be renamed Hanweir? Am I Hanweir?

I have come to love and fear this wall. Councilwoman Blackwell, in her anger, seems to have been a bearer of overwhelming truths. By enclosing ourselves we have ensured that anything sealed with us behind the walls of Hanweir cannot get out. This truth became far too clear last night with the unfortunate discover that former popular pear farmer, Hadwin Dodd, was a lycanthrope. He was killed last night in front of his own house after a most disturbing public transformation and moonlight hunt. He died only after slaughtering two children in his lupine state.

Perhaps we, the makers of our cage, deserve this. We have sinned, and our punishment is raining in blood from the sky and tearing transformed flesh behind our doors.

I find myself praying to no one in particular. Avacyn and her vultures will certainly not help me. Instead I whisper desperate prayers to the void of the night–to the cold witch-hour, when only the moon can hear me. It feels pointless. I’m not sure if the moon can do me much good.

Perhaps all I can do is turn to those around me.

Perhaps the only solution is to join with the rest of the sinners and wayward souls here in this hapless box we made.

Our salvation is not in the skies or in the hymns or in books. It is closeness with our neighbors, embracing each other and embracing our humanity.

As I write with my pen, the truth becomes manifest.

Coming together is the only option.

- Oliver Hayfield”

“Preserved Pears - Perhaps you’ll enjoy these more than I do. I can’t stand the taste anymore.

- Oliver Hayfield”

Sounds like things are getting a little Hanweird.

Box #5: Recebi uma caixa misteriosa da Wizards of the Coast!! #HANWEIRCHRONICLE #MTGSOI

Translation: I received a Mystery Box from Wizards of the Coast!! #HANWEIRCHRONICLE #MTGSOI

 Rem Karolus,

I write to you from the Hanweir Province (formerly the town of Hanweir). I understand that recently you have been hunting angels, but we found something that might still be of interest to you.

Our captain of the wall recently killed a werewolf within the perimeter of our town and was startled to find that the creature did not transform back to human form when he died. I have included part of the skin and the tip of the arrow that killed him as evidence. Please answer as soon as possible – my town grows in apprehension and concern about the condition of the world beyond our walls.

Thank you,

Oliver Hayfield

Headline: Decree Passed for Mandatory Communal Meals

Editor:  A large number of twins have been born simultaneously in Hanweir, suddenly.

Box #6: 这顶帽子不太适合我们了 …..

Translation: This hat doesn't quite suit us anymore...

Box #7: Hanweir Chronicle to Abandon Byline...

Headline: Hanweir Chronicle to Abandon Byline

Box #8: Strange Tidings from a man who has forgotten that punctuation exists. Get well soon, Oliver!

Headline: ... Tremendously alive...

 Thus concludes the Hanweir Chronicle.

Hanweir, the Writhing Township - Art by Vincent Proce

And so ends the Hanweir Chronicle... and the entire village.  Emrakul's influences combined all twins, merged all the populace, to one horror.  Farewell, Oliver...

This shows how the influences of Eldrazi affects even ordinary citizens.  The people of Innistrad were changed, mutated, merged, into Eldrazi horrors.  The Travails were at their climax with Nahiri pulling Emrakul from Zendikar to Innistrad.  And so the stage was set for the Gatewatch to come to stop this Eldrazi threat!

Dominaria Then and Now: Planar Gates

Planar connections to Dominaria:

Rabiah the Infinite

The Assassins of Suq'Ata
by Scott Hungerford, originally published in the Duelist.

The Suq'Ata originally came from the plane of Rabiah the Infinite, an Arabesque world connected to the plane of Dominaria through a series of huge, magical cyclone gates. In the distant past, when the gates between Dominaria and Rabiah were secure, many people crossed through the gates to make their home in the magic-rich environment of Jamuraa.

A number of these people, who would eventually become known as the Suq'Ata, settled and built cities reminiscent of their distant home. They began to build a trading empire, and soon had caravans traversing the huge continent of Jamuraa in search of valuables and profit. While this mercantile society was well-versed in spells, treasure, and artifice, with them also came one of the oldest arts on Rabiah--the way of the assassin.

Within the modern cities of the Suq'Ata there exists a network of secret guilds wholly devoted to murder. Using spells of summoning, fear, and mind-numbing cold, the assassins of Suq'Ata seek not to defeat their opponents outright, but to poison them over time in a variety of insidious ways--perhaps a cobra trained to remain still until it strikes, or food tainted with a tasteless poison, delivered by an unseen hand.

The Suq'Ata assassins have a variety of spells and charms that generate an aura of fear, allowing them to pass through the most well-guarded halls and chambers. Even the most vigilant of guards will flee from the smallest swampfly if the fear-aura spell is woven well by an assassin. Suq'Ata assassins have been known to walk through the heart of a crowded banquet hall to deliver their poisonous gift, either by knife or vial, no matter how many guards are present.

One of the oldest folktales in Suq'Ata society is about an assassin that trained a venomous serpent to hold itself in an upright position for endless hours. Then a simple illusion would be cast across it, so that the serpent appeared as nothing more than a simple wax candle. Once set into place on a noble's bedside, the snake would strike repeatedly at anyone who tried to put a match to its deadly head.

User "MakesOnAPlane" created this wonderful bloodlines chart:

Info from DnD Innistrad campaign on Strefan Maurer: "After his father’s death, Strefan studied magic and forged a pact with the demon Shilgengar in return for the promise of immortality. After murdering his brother Sergei and drinking his blood, Strefan journeyed to Markov Manor and consulted with Edgar Markov. Together, they worked with Shilgengar to create the twelve bloodlines of vampires on Innistrad."

Ending synopsis and comments:

While the initial Harvesttide Festival was a massacre by both werewolf and Vampire, Arlinn may be able to convince werewolves of a new forward path, towards a better Innistrad.  Most of the Vampire families attended the Crimson Wedding, but it was not concluded, Edgar in the end, rejected Olivia, despite her influencing blood magic, and possibility of using the Moonsilver key to gain the vampires control over angels.  Many vampires were killed, and we don't know the fate of Castle Voldaren - was it destroyed, or at least seriously damaged, much like Markov Manor? Sorin is however rebuilding, giving new hope to groups of humans on Innistrad, his homeplane.  With the second harvesttide ritual complete, day and night are in balance once more on Innistrad, while things like Thraben are still recovering and filled with Zombies, and the Angels are still not a stronger force.  Finally, Arlinn has built a better connection to the Gatewatch planeswalkers Chandra, Teferi, and Kaya. Teferi mentions the potential re-growing threat of Phyrexians, which were seen seeking Immortality solutions on Kaldheim.  We still don't have a clear idea of what the Gatewatch looks like, or who are still members.  We know from the Dominaria storyline that Karn is seeking aid to stop New Phyrexia- and that there is now their corruption on Kaldheim at least.  For now, we will have to wait and see what happens in the Neon Dynasty of Kamigawa!

While this blog has taken a pause from lore compilations due to Wizards combining most of their lore on one page, we felt the return to Innistrad worthy of a new archive log.  Please comment with any requests for other planes, stories, or assistance finding things.

Magi Nation Duel - Traitor's Reach story through flavor

Traitor's reach was a set of Magi-Nation Duel cards that were never printed in paper, but we have the whole set released.  Magi-Nation was a game heavily influenced by story, and often, story elements (untold anywhere else, as there wasn't web-fiction for it) appeared on cards.  Traitor's Reach was the set with the most such flavor text, so we've compiled all of the relevant storyline flavor text below.  A synopsis of what we can tell from it:

The dark twins had created the Nightmare construct from Kybar's Fang and the knowledge found in the Great Library, and gotten access from T'lok, who was turned by Warrada, and became a traitor.

The coalition of magi from many regions assembled in Naroom, with Nar magi heading out first.  They had a meal together, then hiked to the Teeth.

Groll discovered T'lok's treachery, and the Twins amassed an army in the mountains, gathering Jalex, Yayek, Togoth among other unnamed shadow magi.

The battle was large - there's many instances of Magi and Shadow Magi battling - the most explicit is that between Xandia, T'lok, and Vorga.  You can read the flavor text on: Flame Jakla, Gorath Cub, Molten Gauntlets, and Xandia.

What else did you get from the story?  We'd love to hear in the comments below!

Cards:

Barrelling Vemment
A flight of Vemments charged Togoth, pummeling his nightmare creatures into animite dust

Bone Cragnoc
"The creatures in the Teeth are beginning to take a slightly more malevolent look.  Perhaps we should investigate."

Bria, Relic Hunter
"Qwade, it's perfect!  How do I use it?"

Brog, Swamp Thug
"Olabra's in charge now! You answer to her or you find yourself in exile. Got it?"

Caldera Aq
The Cald Magi charged up the slopes of Kybar's Teeth, hurling fire as they went.  Before them loomed the forces of the Dark Twins.

Carillion Titan
As Yaki's creatures charged the foul minions of the Core, the carillion titan continued to grow, moving slowly but surely toward the Great Library.

Circling Darbok
As the collected forces of the Moonlands converged on the slopes of Kybar's Teeth, darboks began to circle, looking for weak creatures to take advantage of.

Crystal Saris
The Shadow Magi were too busy fending off Gogor's assult to notice that the saris had doubled in size.

Dark Vellup
Harror ambushed Dey in the vast expanses of d'Resh.  "Time to pay, fool," she hissed, between clenched teeth.

Flame Jakla
T'lok sood over Vorga, ready to drop a massive boulder on the prone Magi.  Just then, Xandia's Jakla appeared and blasted T'lok off the edge of the cliff.

Flashfreeze
Velouria's creatures surrounded the twisted furok. A blue flash of energy flowed from creature to creature, sucking the energy from it.

Gorath Cub
Chains wrapped tightly around Xandia, forcing a scream of rage from her lips. T'lok stepped from behind a boulder. "You didn't think I'd be that easy to get rid of, did you?"

Grapple Tooth
Hrada's spell barely missed Hok as he rolled off the cliff.  His trusty hook saved him from a long, painful fall.

Groll the Fallen
"Tlok! What have you done?"

Grotto Phrup
Bria's phrup nullified the magic of the relics guarding Evu's study. A brief search of the premises revealed exactly what she had been looking for.

Harvest Feast
"They make take our land, but they'll never take MY KITCHEN!" yelled Poad.  With that, the coalition forces ate what might be their last meal before the assault on the Dark Twins.

Korremar, Avatar
Korremar met Rayje and Sinder on their way out of Paradwyn.  It was easy to convince the legend and his apprentice that their goals were the same.

Lanyx, Reaper
"It's time to repay some people for their treacheries.  Korremar, Barak, Harror..."

Lightning Braggle
Lightning rained from the skies onto the heads of the Shadow Magi.  Whenever it touched the ground, the electricity took the form of a braggle.

Molten Gauntlets
"No one hurts my little sister! Especially not some two-bit Shadow Magi!" Xandia looked over the cliff to see what had become of T'lok, but he was gone.

Muck Shovel
"Hah! Your Pyder is mine now! "Arosa boasted.  "Not for long," Blygt said, a sneer on his face.

Nightmare Construct
"I've got something for that meddling Rayje, and his little apprentice too." - Warrada

Polar Eebit
Laranel and her people arrived too late to help Yaki free Naroom but they were among the first to head for Kybar's Teeth to fight the Twins.

Pruitt, Ringsmith
"Yaki, why won't you look at me? What have they done to you?"

Ripcurl
Togoth laughed. "You old fool! You may have defeated my drush but you've made my dryte stronger!" "Don't worry, I've got plans for your dryte." Mobis said.

Salara
With a swish of her wrist, Salara's orshaa grew in size.  Warrada's ball of purple energy bounced harmlessly off it.

Shadow Fird
Flocks of these foul beasts now follow Sperri wherever she roams.

Shock Ring
"Alright, Jalex, it's go time. Show me what you've got." -Ora, Defender of the Sky

Shroud of the Master
"You're not worthy to bear such a noble burden, Hrada. Take it off at once!" -Morag

Sinder, Apprentice
"Sinder, go help the others.  Warrada is mine." -Rayje

Slinking Greal
"Who cares where these things came from? All that matters is that they seem to want to help." -Yaki, Core Stalker

Snag Arboll
The new tricks that Yaki had learned in his solitude took Hrada by surprise. Dream creatures appeard from teh surrounding underbrush, leeching the energy from Hrada's dark furoks.

Sneaky Weebo
"Yes,brother, they do seem to be taking a liking to you." -Warrada

Speag Sprouts
At a gesture from Iyori, the speag sprouts swarmed as the core hyren dove in for an attack. Weaving energy between themselves, the sprouts began to grow in size.

Stagadan Charger
"CHAAAAAAAARGE!!!" - Poad, Innkeeper

Stubborn Chogus
The ferocity with which the Chogus covered Groll's escae amazed him. "I must report T'lok's betrayal to Targ'n before it's too late," thought the battered Keeper.

Tal'ik
"Don't bother, T'lok.  I'm prepared for your tricks."

T'lok, Traitor
"Of Course I'll show you how to use Kybar's Fang."

Topple
The cragnoc began to collapse under the barrage of Core creatures. Hrada's laugh of triumph turned to a groan of despair as he realized that all his Dream Creatures were in the shadow of the falling beast.

Twisted Dreams
Togoth snapped his fingers.  The approaching ormagon let out a bellow of pain, then vanished in a flash of light.

Vine Bhatar
With a powerful lash, the vine bhatar ripped energy from the gorath, leaving it dazed and breathless.

Xandia
"I'm very protective of my little sister.  Mess with her, and you mess with me."

Yayek
With Nagsis missing, Yayek has made his way to Hrada's side.

Magi Nation 2021 Updates (Part 1)

Welcome to a new year, and some more updates and fan found things from Magi-Nation Duel!

Shorter update, with hopefully more fan content to come!

Found relics from the Vault of Knowledge!

On the MND Discord, he also asked the community about the format of the game: 02/15/2021

years ago a fan told me he thought The Spoils was steampunk. I adjusted my monocle and begged to differ. he then made a reasoned argument.

in the spirit of understanding, do those of you have played it consider the GBC game a JRPG? or a Zeldalike? what games does it seem most similar to? and what parts of the gameplay pulled you in? how important were the turn-based battles? and the creature collecting? would you have preferred a more action-based gameplay? I have so many questions.
  • Old trailers and 2i videos:

Fan Creations and activity!

  • A fan created a 3D Printed Bisiwog!

  •  A fan, Demosthenes, showed images of their Lego dream creatures!  Diobor, Furok, and Parmalag!
