Universal Moonlands Magi (custom set!)

 by MagiMutt

For as long as I can remember, I have always had a fascination with Universal Studios monster
movies. From Dracula to the Phantom, from Frankenstein to The Creature from the Black Lagoon, there
was just something about these characters that I fell in love with.

Fast forward to 2006, after the “hiatus” of Magi-Nation when several notable of 2Is’ founding
members went on to release The Spoils. Somehow, I got involved in ideas of a promo set to be released
for the game and thus the first five characters came into fruition: High Priest Imhotep, Count Mau, Mr.
Talbot, Fr4nk31f573in'5 Majig, and Eucritta Melanolimnetes. Based on the Universal Monsters, these
cards had VERY minor input from myself, simply stating their source and offering names.

Having such a minuscule input into the cards, I decided to not have my name included in any
acknowledgements of these cards. A second set of characters was suggested, but the team had decided
to move on from the Universal Monsters idea by then. The Spoils went into hibernation. It is still played
in select groups and the community is still active.

Still, my ‘obsession’ continued and when Rich Werner opened commissions in 2019 for custom
artwork, I jumped at the chance. It started with a simple idea:
There are 13 regions in Magi-Nation Duel. There are at least 13 notable characters from Universal
Studios. How should they merge together. The first was easy: Dracula appeared in tombs, castles, and
the classic gothic scenery. He kept a coffin of dirt underground. The Magi based on Dracula would
naturally be from the Underneath.

Going by this logic, I presented Rich with the idea of Magi based on Universal Studios Monsters in the
following combinations:
Underneath-----Dracula
Arderial-----Phantom of the Opera
Naroom-----Frankenstein’s Monster (Adam)
Weave-----The Mummy
Orothe-----Creature from the Black Lagoon
Core-----Bride of Frankenstein
Paradwyn-----The Invisible Man
Cald-----Dr. Jeykll
Nar-----Mr. Hyde
Universal-----Van Helsing
d’Resh-----Scorpion King
Bograth-----Hunchback of Notre Dame
Kybar’s Teeth-----The Wolf Man
Alternates Universal-----Alucard

He seemed to like the idea of something different and started working on my ideas (while also finishing
up work for “Dungeon Party.”
While Widget had created suitable frames for the game, and I got an official artist to work on artwork, my
card idea needed...well, ideas. So, I turned to the fanbase and got input from several members of the
community.

Artimillies Strongbow, Zucriy Amsuna, nol_bricks, drakk2 and several others shared ideas that were
included in the final designs of the Universal Moonlands promo set. To be clear, while I had some general
ideas about what each Magi did, I had zero experience in keeping balance with my initial designs. They
were...passable at best. Most credit for the Powers and abilities of the characters comes from
community-based input.

I will, however, take full credit for the names and flavor text of these cards. I used several movies and other sources in naming characters. Between actors and writers, most of the cards came up relatively easy to name.

The eventual design for the Underneath Magi included my son’s idea for a Wolf/Bat creature. This would
be cropped out in the Magi card, to be included in a later card. The name I settled on was Bela Zaro.
Using the actors name (Bela Lugosi) and a vampire character from Ravenloft (Strahd von Zarovich), made
it simple.

Although sometimes the original idea didn’t QUITE convey what I wanted, Rich was able to take input
from me about the characters designs. Case in point: the Monster was suggested to be a “...big
lumbering oaf. "He lost his last fight with a Core Magi, but he's just too stubborn to admit it" (the
monsters mate is a core magi in this set).

Got it mostly right in one shot, but there’s nothing in this picture to suggest a mate. So we had a
conversation:

Me: Can you do more Lurch, less Hanna Barbara? Also, to tie into the Bride, he needs to be
holding a rose. She's already broken his heart, and the rose is what he remembers her by.

RW: Yeah. I am trying to keep the MND feel. I’ll give another pass.

Me: Rather be closer to the empty headed football player that just lost the head cheerleader to
the nerd.

And thus, Adam Carloff was created. Adam being a term usually suggesting the creature and Carloff
based on the actor's name (Boris Karloff).
I used quotes from the books or the movies for flavor text. Most are easy to follow, but one I screwed
up on. I used a movie quote that references the character but there’s zero context for it.
It also happened to happen on a card that has the most obscure way to name a character I’ve seen:

All of this to say that my first incursion into custom cards was kind of successful in that MY designs were
done, MY way, with help from several other people to show off something that could be used in the
game.

But HOW can they be used in games, you ask? Simple. I had custom cards made:

LEGALIZE: I am in no any shape or form affiliated with 2i or any company or person connected to 2i. I paid an artist (formerly of 2i) to create artwork for my personal designs for cards. I (with input from others) completed a set of characters that can be used within the rules of a particular card game. These cards are not legal in any way and are not officially recognized as part of the card game.

I have a limited supply of sets of these “Universal Moonlands” Magi. In fact, I have only 47 sets left.

They are available, through me, until I’m sold out. Each sealed set will run $10. You get all 13 Magi.

Magi-Nation Duel 2022 Updates (Part 1)

Welcome to another Magi-Nation Duel community update.  There's quite a bit of found discussion on old cards existing, and fans are making new art and card design.  Check out the history articles below on Tacos and pop-culture, and we hosted another tournament!

Fan Content and Discussion

User/16BitShinobi has found an interesting discovery for the game, that in the Base Set, there are some cards missing in foil for 1st Edition.  We knew Only uncommon Magi and Creatures were printed in foil in 1st ed, but some cards were released as promos later.  However, there seem to be no foils, promotional or otherwise, of:

  • Baloo Root

  • Channeler's Gloves

  • Dream Balm

  • Mirror Pendant

  • Relic Mirror

If you have seen any of these foil in 1st edition (not unlimited!), please contact them or comment below!  It is highly unlikely that they exist in the game!

User/Zucriyamsuna found a list of Base Set demo cards that are not listed online (on BlueFurok.com or elsewhere).

list of the demo cards that are not on Blue Furok:

  • Thunder Hyren

  • Orwin

  • Yaki

  • Deep Hyren

  • Giant Parathin

  • Corf Pearl

  • Gruk

  • Strag

  • Agovo

  • Cave Hyren

  • Ormagon

  • Colossus

  • Book of Ages

  • Water of Life

Edit: User TopDeck sent us scans of these demo deck cards missing!

Are there any others?  We'd love to see the images of things not found yet!  And speaking of Colossus from the demo decks, have you looked at its flavor text?

Who is Wyloce?  Were they a previous Regis of Arderial, or was this just a playtest name that got erased?  We may never know.

We have a few users making the regional symbol pins!

Check out their designs so far:
https://sta.sh/2132vlc46h6t  and they're looking for feedback on any needed changes before printing and ordering becomes possible!  Please contact user/silverfang on the discord for feedback or comments.

Rich Werner has had new commission pieces for the world, take a look at these sketches!

Found relics from the Vault of Knowledge!

A user u/Frisbey posted their story of visiting 2i in 2003:

I travelled to WA and stopped by 2i while we were there. we got to meet Matt Holmberg, got a print off of the Rainbow Hyren in progress and he signed it. Got a sheet of uncut decks (signed), and a few other cards (signed). we got to rummage through "The Vault" for a bunch of stuff. it was so fun. I miss this game, haha! He also pulled up the PSD file for Blizzard Core, and he proved to us that there was indeed a drawing of a taco in the under layers

They mentioned Tacos!  Check out all the taco art references below in two articles!

Fans found this image from the defunct Brazilian Magi Nation page!

A user from an in-person play community showed that they still had images of the Magi-Nation League activity sheets.   The secret message by Ulk actually ties into the story, and the learn to draw magi is a great source material for how magi were initially designed!

This blog also published various articles!  Learn about the hidden tacos in the card art, and read up on all the references in the game's cards and flavor text!

Magi-Nation Pop Culture References - Traitor's Reach and Promos

While Traitor's Reach was never released to the public, a leak has all the card images for the last 10 years!  Here it is, the final article in this series!

by u/SomethingAboutCards

Traitor’s Reach

And here we are: Traitor’s Reach, the set that could have been. While this set was, sadly, never released, we still know what cards we would have gotten, and there are plenty of great references in there as well.

Bulomp: MC Hammer, “U Can’t Touch This

"Can't touch these." -- Bulomp's motto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otCpCn0l4Wo

If you were born anywhere close to the 90’s, knowledge of this song is already ingrained in your DNA. You know the song, you caught the reference already, I don’t even need to say anything else.

Disc of Inferno: The Trammps, “Disco Inferno”

"Burn, baby, burn!" -- Inscription on Disc of Inferno
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5lSeYd_riw

Yes, this is a fun case where the name and flavor text both tie into the reference. “Disc of Inferno” sure sounds a lot like “Disco Inferno,” and the song calls out “burn, baby, burn” pretty frequently. Another self evident one.

Sand Sark: Saturday Night Live, “Land Shark”

"Knock, knock." "Who is it?" "Sandygram!" -- Old d'Reshi Joke

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_NS2H55dxI

The classic “Land Shark” sketch features a fierce, clever shark that can walk on land and trick people into opening doors for it. One of its most popular tricks is knocking and saying it’s delivering a candygram. So it’s got a little pun here, with “Sand Sark” and “Sandygram” instead of “Land Shark” and “Candygram,” but it’s still a fun reference.

Rolling Baldar: “A rolling stone gathers no moss.”

A rolling baldar gathers no Moss Trulbs.

This one’s another play on the saying "a rolling stone gathers no moss." Not a reference to a show or anything, but still counts.

N'ssah: “The Emperor’s New Groove”

"Don't listen to that guy, he's trying to lead you down the path of the Core. I'm gonna lead you down the path of rocks."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmOc4GLq8xM

In Disney’s underrated but incredibly meme-worthy “Emperor’s New Groove,” the character Kronk often has conversations with his shoulder angel and shoulder devil. When the shoulder devil first appears, he tells Kronk “Don’t listen to that guy, he’s trying to lead you down the path of righteousness. I’m gonna lead you down the path that rocks.” So that’s clearly where N’ssah’s flavor text comes from.

Harvest Feast: “Braveheart”

They may take our land, but they will never take my kitchen!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gr_OpFxCx-A

Yeah, it’s a play on the “Freedom” speech from “Braveheart,” where he says “they may take our lives, but they will never take our freedom.” Another one that you already knew, even if you never saw the film.

Sphor Charm: Lucky Charms commercials

"They're always after my lucky Sphor Charm!" -- Quilla
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foghWSflbIA

Here’s another one probably written during breakfast. The Lucky Charms cereal commercials always have the mascot, Lucky the leprechaun, getting chased by children “after me Lucky Charms.” And odds are you already knew that one, too.

Iain, Commando: “Commando”

Remember when I said I'd save you for last? I lied.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mYSE2xWjcI

The Paradwyn-Bograth War is clearly having its effect on Iain, who’s taken up full commando gear, knives and all. And his flavor text? A reference to the Arnod Schwarzenegger film, “Commando,” where he reveals his promise to kill Sully last was… less than truthful.

Nightmare Construct: “The Wizard of Oz”

"I've got something for that meddling Rayje, and his little apprentice too." -- Warrada
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQ_g6NOo7yo

So this isn’t a direct quote, but saying “and his little apprentice too” is enough like “and your little dog too” to draw the parallel. Could even include a “Scooby Doo” reference by calling him “meddling,” but that might be even more of a stretch.

Keru: “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”

The Tuk Berries taste like Tuk Berries!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pwvB4_Te8A

“Come with me, and you’ll be, in a world of pure Magi-Nation.” Yes, this flavor text is a reference to the line “The snozzberries taste like snozzberries.” Just do yourself a favor and don’t look up what a snozzberry is.

Marella, Savant: “The Emperor’s New Groove”

"Oh, right. The relic. The relic for Gia, the relic chosen specially to help Gia. Gia's relic. Uhh... that relic?" Kuzco's poison

That’s right, we’ve got another “Emperor’s New Groove” reference! And it’s another line from Kronk, at that, as he remembers the poison. The poison for Kuzco. The poison specially chosen to kill Kuzco. Kuzco’s poison. That poison.

Promos (LIMITED)

The promos of Magi-Nation Duel were all marked "Limited" at the bottom, and released throughout the game's history.  Here are the references on them!

Orlon's Ring: “Spaceballs”

"The ring is worthless! I found it in a box of jellybeans. The power is in YOU, Orlon."
https://youtu.be/RI0i_tL-8aU?t=226

In Mel Brooks’ “Spaceballs,” characters channel the power of the Schwartz through mystical rings. But when Lone Starr loses his ring in a battle with Dark Helmet, the voice of Yogurt reaches out to tell him “the ring is bupkis, I found it in a Cracker Jack box!”

Chogus Little: Chicken Little

"Is the sky falling?"

The children’s story “Chicken Little” (which was adapted into an animated Disney film barely anyone saw) features the titular chicken freaking out over the sky falling. Of course, it’s not, but it did give us this nice little reference.

Furlosk: Bill Withers, “Lean on Me”

"We all need somebody to lean on."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHSOVEqqm44

Another musical reference. It’s a clear reference to the lyrics, so I’ll just leave it at that as you listen to the song.

Thunderquake: Professional wrestling

"Are you rrrrready to rrrrrumble?" -- Gogor, Celebrated Hero of the Underneath
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoSJCzLlgk0

Even if you don’t watch professional wrestling, you’ve probably heard someone shout “are you ready to ruuumble!” or the variation, “Let’s get ready to ruuumble!” So this is another pretty clear-cut one, I don’t think I need to explain any more.

Warrior's Boots: Nancy Sinatra, “These Boots are Made for Walkin’”

"These boots were made for stompin'."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDmidrIDB4o

Stompin’, walkin’, either way, you get the reference. And yes, these boots will walk all over you, thanks to their ability to let players summon a creature before the attack step.

And that's all, folks!  This concludes all the pop culture references used on flavor text or art in Magi-Nation Duel!  With luck, perhaps, we'll see the release of both unreleased sets, Traitor's Reach and Daybreak, and we can get our hands on these cards, and new jokes and references for the 2020s!

More Magi-Nation Taco Cards!

Well it looks like we missed some! Tacos hidden as 'Easter eggs' in the cards of Magi-Nation duel!  Here is the continuation of more tacos in the game!  We hope this has been enjoyable for the community, to continue seeking tacos and other fun gems of the game!

Trygar's Will

Can you see the designs to the lower right of the seal on the scroll there of our friend Trygar's will?  Seems to have a very familiar shape, with ingredients between a tortilla shell!  A taco!

Korg's Poetry

Two!  Two tacos on one card!  Korg may not be able to write very well (or at all), but he can draw Zet, and two tacos next to him!

Statement of Core Values

This one's a bit blurry and harder to see, but apparently, Korg likes to draw tacos.  This one is also upside down, right above the 'K' of his name, because of course Korg knows how to read!  ;) Here's a zoomed in image of an actual card:

Admittedly, some fans have argued that this might instead be the Core regional symbol.  Or a burger.  Or  even a hotdog.  But it's likely a taco, from how much Korg likes his illustrations!

Here's the link to the first article, detailing the other hidden taco cards.  Let us know if you find more tacos, or hidden Easter Eggs!

Magi-Nation Pop Culture References (Base - Awakening)

One of the things I loved about Magi-Nation growing up was the little references they snuck into the cards and flavor text. Sometimes it was a quote from a movie I liked, other times it was little references in the art. And as I grew older, the more of them I began to notice.

So with that in mind, I’ve gone through every single expansion, from the base set to Traitor’s Reach, and grabbed all the references I could find (and then cross-referenced them with several that ZucriyAmsuna posted on this Reddit thread. a few years back, many of which still managed to sneak past me).

What did they reference the most? Which were the most obscure? What set had the most references? Brace yourself, because we’ve got a long trip through ahead. This part one covers Base Set and Awakening, the first two sets released!

by u/SomethingAboutCards

Base Set

The MND base set (Unlimited) starts things off easy with ten references, and out of those ten, three refer to the same Weird Al song:

Baloo Root, Sap of Life, and Nimbulo: “Albuquerque,” by Weird Al Yankovic

Albuquerque

“IT’S GOOD FOR YOU!”

"You got any Weebos?" "NO! WE'RE ALL OUT OF WEEBOS!" "Well, in that case, what do you have?"

"All we got now is a little energy." "Oh, okay, I'll take that."

Baloo Root has the first quote from this song:

“I said to my mom

I said: ‘Hey, mom, what's up with all the sauerkraut?’

And my dear, sweet mother

She just looked at my like a cow looks at an oncoming train

And she leaned right down next to me

And she said: ‘IT’S GOOD FOR YOU!’

And then she tied me to the wall and stuck a funnel in my mouth

And force fed me nothing but sauerkraut

Until I was twenty six and a half years old”

For what it’s worth, I hate sauerkraut too, and Baloo Root only looks marginally tastier.

Sap of Life and Nimbulo both reference the same scene, where the singer character goes to the donut shop, only to be told they’re all out of everything:

"’No, we're outta bear claws!’

I said, ‘Well, in that case… in that case, what do you have?’

He says ‘All I got right now is this box of one dozen starving, crazed weasels’

I said ‘OK, I'll take that.’"

Fun fact: this same scene gets referenced again later down the line with WOOT! and Forest Blessing. We’ll circle back to those in a bit.

Greater Vaal: “The Incredible Hulk”

“Don't make it angry. You won't like it when it's angry.”

Okay, this one’s an easy one. Right after “Hulk smash,” the most famous line connected to the Hulk is “Don’t make me angry. You won’t like me when I’m angry.” Low-hanging fruit? Maybe. But it’s effective.

Orwin's Gaze: “Spaceballs” by Mel Brooks

"When will then be now?" "Soon!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRGCZh5A8T4 .

Now this is a fun one. In “Spaceballs,” arguably one of Mel Brook’s greatest films, there’s a brilliant scene where Dark Helmet and Colonel Sandurz try to figure out where the film’s heroes are going… by watching “Spaceballs: The Movie.” This includes watching a scene where they’re watching the exact same scene, so “everything that happens now, is happening now.”

Y’know what? Just watch the scene for yourself, it’s fantastic. Or better yet, go watch the entire movie.

Corf: Mortal Kombat

"Finish him."

Another easy one. Anyone who’s played Mortal Kombat has heard “Finish him!” at least once, whether they were on the giving or receiving end of the finishing move. It’s such an iconic line to the series that pretty much every film adaptation had to include it, shoehorned in or not.

O'qua: “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi”

"We have powerful friends. You're going to regret this."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JeQXyyoJL4

Simple but effective. It’s a reference to Leia’s warning to Jabba the Hutt after he imprisons her and Han Solo. And this isn’t the last time O’qua gets a “Star Wars” quote, as we’ll see again later.

Tidal Wave: “Old Ironsides”

“Oh, better that her shattered hulk

Should sink beneath the wave;

Her thunders shook the mighty deep,

And there should be her grave…”

This one is interesting, because to my knowledge it’s the only time when the source is directly quoted and credited. It’s an excerpt from “Old Ironsides” by Oliver Wendell Holmes, and I don’t need to tell you that, because it’s right there on the card. You can read it for yourself here: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/46547/old-ironsides

Fossik and Channeler's Gloves: “Schoolhouse Rock”

“Knowledge or Power, your choice.”
"To the Core with knowledge. I need power NOW!" -- Fossik, Underkeeper

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjNM4eItNRA

“Knowledge is power!” At least that’s what we’re told at the start of every episode of “Schoolhouse Rock.” That seems to be Fossik’s thing, in fact, as pretty much any time he’s quoted, it’s always about knowledge and power. (As such, we won’t be including every time he mentions that on this list.)

Enrich: Got Milk?

"It's packed with nine essential nutrients and a full day's supply of energy! Got soil?"

As much as it makes me feel old to realize that there are fully grown adults who didn’t live through the “Got milk?” advertising campaign, those of us who saw those commercials daily will recognize the quote pretty quickly. With that said, I’d still much rather have a glass of milk than of soil, so the Underneath might need a slightly different marketing campaign.

Sinder: “Dune”

“He who controls the flame, controls the universe.”

This is one that I missed at first, so thanks to u/ZucriyAmsuna for catching it. In “Dune,” the Spice Melange is so valuable that there’s a saying “He who controls the spice, controls the universe.” So the next question is: can Sinder’s flame allow people to travel through space? (Considering Magi-Nation is set in the Moonlands, that might not be too farfetched…)

Paralit: Starcraft

"Must...have...energy!"

Paralit has a reference to the game Starcraft: Brood War (expansion), from 1998. One of the units in the game, the Dark Archon will frequently say the phrase, "Must have energy" when it is clicked on to receive an order.

 Heat Lens: Fire and Forget

Edit: we missed Heat Lens! Fire and Forget is a reference to missile launch systems, where you don't have to guide the missile to hit its target once launched. Scary!

Awakening

After the base set came Awakening, and with it came even more references. This one ups the ante on the “Star Wars” quotes, but also brings us the first “Last Will and Temperament” (aka “Boot to the Head”) reference, which we’ll be seeing at least a few more times down the line.

Blast Gloves: “Batman”

"Where does he get those wonderful toys?"

Batman always has a plan and a tool for every contingency, as the Joker (played by Jack Nicholson) learned in the 1989 movie. Upon seeing Batman make a daring escape with a combination grappling hook/zipline, all the Joker could say was “Where does he get those wonderful toys?” Well, in this case, the Blast Gloves come right from the deck, so I guess Batman has a pretty good draw engine.

Firefly Swarm: Home on the Range

"Oh give me a home, where the Leaf Hyren roam, Where the Pliths and Carillions play, Where always is heard, the Furok's horn bird, And the bugs don't keep burning all day!" -- Poad, Naroom Innkeeper

Not all of these references are going to be to pop culture. There are also plenty of old sayings and songs, like this one, sung to the tune of “Home on the Range.” Considering it’s a song from our world, we can still count it as a reference.

Darkbreed Hyren: “Lord of the Rings”

"One hyren to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them."

In J.R.R. Tolkein’s masterpiece, the “Lord of the Rings” books, the one ring of power has this inscription: “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.” That line is part of a longer verse about the rings forged for the elven-kings, dwarf-lords, and so forth, but the point stands: the Darkbreed Hyren is to Agram as the one ring was to Sauron.

Agram's Armor: “The Addams Family”

"You rang?"

https://youtu.be/zgKxham7q7Y

Lurch, the loyal (and seemingly undead) butler of the Addams Family, has a catchphrase whenever he answers the door: “You rang?” Although in this case, anyone ringing Agram’s armor is likely to get a much less friendly response.

Turn: “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi”

"Agram will show you the true nature of power. He is your master now."

When Luke Skywalker went to confront Darth Vader for the final time, he thought he could turn his father back to the light side of the Force. Vader thought otherwise, telling Luke “The Emperor will show you the true nature of power. He is your master now.” Of course, the difference here is that any Core magi casting Turn is not likely to make a last-minute switch to the side of righteousness and betray Agram.

Sperri: “Peanuts”

"Happiness is a furry friend and a flock of blue birds."

This may be a bit of a stretch, but not unreasonable. There’s a classic “Peanuts” comic where Lucy says “happiness is a warm puppy,” a quote that was reused for book titles and a song in “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.” (Whether or not The Beatles also referenced it in “Happiness is a Warm Gun” is a question for another time.) So Sperri’s flavor text isn’t exactly a direct quote, but enough of a reference to include it here.

Deadfall: “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi”

"It's a trap!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4F4qzPbcFiA

Okay, do I even need to explain this one? “It’s a trap!” has become a meme at this point. We know the deal: Admiral Ackbar shouts it when he realizes that the second Death Star is fully operational, and the Empire lured the Rebel Alliance there to shoot them all down.

Sorreah: “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi”

"This is your last chance. Free us or... wait... Hey! NO!" -- O'Qua, Summoner

Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi - Jabba's Palace, Sarlacc Pit Battle (Movie Clip)

That’s right, we have another “Star Wars” quote! O’Qua once more repeats a line once said to Jabba: “This is your last chance. Free us or die.” Jabba ended up choosing death, although in the case of this flavor text, Sorreah's ability is making it a little harder for O’Qua to follow through.

Forest Blessing: Weird Al Yankovic, “Albuquerque”

"Got any Sap of Life?" "NO! WE'RE ALL OUT OF SAP OF LIFE!"

That’s right, it’s another quote from Weird Al’s “Albuquerque,” with the same donut shop scene. And it’s not even the last time that scene gets quoted, though I’m not complaining.

Trygar: The Frantics, “Last Will and Temperament”
"And to Korremar, who helped me write this will, I leave... not a boot to the head, but a rabid bisiwog, to be placed in his trousers."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V1Mn5-xF0w

The Frantics’ "Last Will and Temperament" sketch (best seen in this Phoenix Wright video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wC2jOSj8xU) features a last will and testament reading wherein everyone receives… a boot to the head. The exception is the lawyer, who receives a rabid Tasmanian devil to be placed in his trousers. So we get our first reference to that sketch here, and it won’t be the last.

Grubble: “StarCraft”

“The merging is complete!”

This is another one that I didn’t catch, but the flavor text is a phrase used in StarCraft when players create an Archon. (You’ll have to forgive me for never having the chance to play StarCraft, but props to Zucriy for catching this one.)

Trask: Lewis Carroll, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”

“It's like an alligator with scales and teeth and claws, It's like a Coral Hyren, but not afraid of Cawhs.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_Doth_the_Little_Crocodile

And here we have another one I didn’t catch, so thanks to the original Reddit thread for pointing it out. Given the Trask’s crocodile-like appearance, the flavor text is a reference to “How Doth the Little Crocodile,” a poem by Lewis Carroll that appeared in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” (I suppose I should re-read that one of these days, but my reading list is already so expansive…)

Furok Guardian: Starcraft

"Power Overwhelming"

Starcraft gets referenced on a few cards, like Furok Guardian! In the 1998 PC game, StarCraft, a unit in the game, the Archon, will frequently say, "Power overwhelming" when it is selected.
